New Pathway for Permanent Residence for Ukrainians in Canada to Launch in October

The Canadian government recently revealed plans to introduce a new pathway for Ukrainians in Canada to apply for permanent residence, commencing from October 23, 2023. This initiative aims to grant permanent residence to Ukrainians with temporary resident status, provided they have at least one family member in Canada. Further details about the program will be disclosed leading up to the launch.

Eligible candidates under this pathway include Ukrainian spouses, common-law partners, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children or grandchildren of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. For those holding a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) visa, the Canadian government will allow them to travel to Canada until March 31, 2024, under the temporary special measures.

Although the acceptance of new applications for CUAET has ceased since July 15, Ukrainians and their family members can still apply for a temporary resident visa (TRV) to enter Canada. Once in Canada on a TRV, Ukrainians and their families will be able to extend their stay for up to three years through study permits and open work permits, with priority processing by IRCC. Additionally, they will have access to settlement services, including language training and employment support.
