Category-Based Express Entry Draws Target Agriculture and Agri-Food Occupations
In a significant move to address labor market needs, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced on May 31st that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) would be introducing category-based selection draws for Express Entry candidates.
As part of this initiative, Express Entry candidates with strong French language skills or work experience in specific fields will be given preference. The chosen fields include agriculture and agri-food occupations, which have been identified by IRCC as experiencing shortages in the Canadian labor market.
IRCC collaborated with provincial and territorial partners, as well as stakeholders across the country, to gather information and insights before selecting these occupations.
Recently, on June 28th, IRCC held its first-ever category-based Express Entry draw, inviting 500 healthcare workers to apply for permanent residency. Subsequently, on July 5th, another category-based draw took place, inviting 500 candidates specializing in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) professions.
