Update: On July 18, 2023, Canada reached the maximum limit of 10,000 applications for the U.S. H-1B visa Open Work Permit stream. If you are an H-1B visa holder, please explore alternative Canadian visa options. The original story continues below.
As of today, individuals holding a United States H-1B specialty occupation visa may be eligible to apply for work and residency in Canada.
The measure, announced by Canada’s Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, on June 27, aims to enhance labor mobility in North America and may benefit numerous workers in high-tech industries in both Canada and the United States, along with their immediate family members.
Successful applicants will receive an open work permit, valid for up to three years, allowing them to work for almost any employer in Canada. This privilege extends to their spouses and dependents, who can apply for their own work or study permits as needed.
According to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the measure will be in effect for either one year or until the cap of 10,000 applicants has been reached. It’s essential to note that this cap applies only to principal applicants and does not include family members.
